We present a model of a student-led community of researchers to highlight the impact of pursuing collaborative machine learning research on the group’s members individually as well as towards achieving shared goals. We provide concrete examples of the guiding principles that led to the evolution of the collaborative from a reading group into a research group and eventually launching a non-profit software product to help non-technical stakeholders leverage artificial intelligence (AI), improving access to advanced technologies, and promoting open science. Our goal is to lay out a template to launch similar small-scale collaborative organisations at different institutes around the world.

Jay Gala

Jay Gala is a Computer Science graduate from the University of Mumbai, India. He is currently working on Neural Architecture Search and Generalization with Prof. Pengtao Xie from UC San Diego and Hate Speech Detection with Dr. Zeerak Talat from Simon Fraser University. His research interests span problems related to language and vision models, with a specific focus on out-of-distribution generalization and compute-efficient learning strategies.

Jhagrut Lalwani (Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute)
Swapneel Mehta (New York University)

I am a Ph.D. student at NYU Data Science working with the Center for Social Media and Politics and collaborating with folks at Oxford University. My research deals with controlling misinformation on social networks using tools from simulation-based inference and causality. I use probabilistic programs to simulate user behavior and information propagation on social networks.
