For our lab in Amsterdam, we are seeking Senior Researcher candidates in the area of Computational Chemistry. The successful applicant is expected to contribute to a program of research in the development of machine-learning-based methods for quantum chemistry, with a focus on density functional theory and other computationally affordable (but in principle exact) many-electron methods that have the potential to transform the predictive power of quantum simulations of molecules and materials. Responsibilities Contribute to and drive an ambitious, high-impact, research agenda in principled machine-learning methodologies for Quantum Chemistry within the context of a highly collaborative research culture.  Develop and test out new ideas within existing or new collaborations Write research code to test new approaches or develop novel theoretical and practical insights Prepare technical papers, presentations and open-source releases of research code. 

Qualifications PhD in computational chemistry, computational condensed matter physics, computer science, or related area A research program demonstrated by publications in relevant top-tier publication venues (e.g. JCP, JPCL, JCTC, PRL, JACS, Angew. Chem, Nat. Chem).  Experience with code development in python Strong understanding of state-of-the-art density functional theory (DFT) and/or ab initio methods, including their implementation and limitations. Preferred: understanding of deep learning and its applications to molecular modelling. Hands-on experience in implementing new methods in quantum chemistry/electronic structure codes (DFT and/or ab-initio), e.g., PySCF, Orca, Molpro, QuantumPackage, Turbomole, etc. Preferred: hands-on experience with deep learning applied to molecular modelling. A research internship typically consists of a project that is mutually discussed and agreed upon between the intern and their mentor. What you’ll be doing…

As a research intern you will work closely with a mentor who is a member of Tableau Research. You will typically meet daily with your mentor to coordinate, plan, and help set expectations. You will be asked to present and provide updates a few times at our team meetings. Research typically involves designing and/or prototyping, along with possible user studies. You will be expected to create a final presentation and write-up of the project. Often, the project evolves into co-authoring an academic paper that could extend beyond the internship period.

Who you are…

Passionate about research. You are a PhD student in good academic standing with at least a couple years of research and publishing experience at high-quality conference and journal venues. In the past, interns have published at venues such as VIS, EuroVis, TVCG, CHI, CSCW, UIST, IUI, DIS, KDD, SIGMOD for example. Having previous internship experience is a plus, but not a requirement.

Aligned with our mission. Your research passion aligns with Tableau’s mission to help people see and understand data.

An effective communicator. You have clear written and oral communication skills.

Highly technical. If your project involves prototyping, you have strong technical skills to prototype in a language of your choice, e.g., D3/JavaScript, Python, R, C++, C#, Java, Go. You will take on the following responsibilities: - Engage in the research and investment process, including idea generation, statistical analysis, model design and implementation - Apply advanced modeling techniques on a variety of market, fundamental and on-chain datasets - Develop robust alpha strategies with trading horizons ranging from hours to days - Monitor new opportunities, risks and developments across digital asset markets - Collaborate in a team environment with quantitative researchers, traders and engineers

You should possess the following qualifications: - 2+ years of quantitative research / systematic investing experience. Prior professional experience in digital assets is preferred - In-depth knowledge of the digital asset ecosystem and market dynamics - Ability to conduct rigorous quantitative research using on-chain datasets - Expertise in data analysis: estimation methods, time series analysis, machine learning techniques - Advanced degree in a quantitative discipline, like statistics, mathematics, physics, computer science, or similar - Excellent skills in at least one programming language (like Python, Java, C, or C++) - Ability to tackle in-depth research projects, discover creative solutions and communicate ideas clearly
