Oriol Vinyals is VP of Research at Google DeepMind, where he is currently co-Technical Lead for Gemini (with Jeff Dean). He obtained his PhD in EECS from the University of California in Berkeley, and joined Google Brain in 2013, transitioning to DeepMind in 2016, now Google DeepMind. Oriol’s research has been featured multiple times by the New York Times, Financial Times, WIRED, BBC, etc., and his articles have been cited over 280,000 times. Some of his contributions such as Gemini, seq2seq, knowledge distillation, or TensorFlow are used in most Google products, serving billions of queries every day. He was the lead researcher of the AlphaStar project, featured on the cover of Nature, creating an agent that defeated a top professional at the game of StarCraft and achieving Grandmaster level. Oriol also contributed to the research and papers for AlphaFold, an AI system providing the solution to the protein folding problem (a 50-year old grand challenge in biology).
