SurgeryCare, AI-Assisted Preparation and Recovery from a Physician-Reviewed Plan
Abstract
Surgery is planned with a doctor, but most of the work of recovering happens at home, and much of it falls to a caregiver. Before the operation, the patient must buy food and prescribed medicines, arrange rides, prepare the house, and line up help. Afterward, a physician-reviewed plan should guide each day. Today that plan arrives on paper. Paper cannot update a grocery list when a preference changes, explain a step to a caregiver in another language, or notice that two medicines from two procedures contain the same ingredient. We present SurgeryCare, an iOS research prototype that carries a physician-reviewed plan through preparation and recovery. A large language model interprets what a patient or caregiver asks for, in their own language, and proposes updates that the person reviews before anything is saved. Local rules then turn the plan and the patient’s context into daily tasks and reminders, meals, groceries, caregiver notes, and medication checks. Every patient, plan, and physician in the prototype is synthetic. Clinical validity and patient benefit are not yet measured.
