Agent Harnesses in Practice: From Everyday Tasks to Autonomous Research Teams

Abstract:

A capable model is only one part of an AI agent. The software around it: its tools, instructions, memory, runtime and ways of interacting with other systems can substantially change what the same model is able to do.
This demo explores agent harnesses at different levels. Visitors can see the same underlying model running through different agent harnesses on various tasks, making the effect of the surrounding system visible. We then show how the same principle extends to autonomous research, where agents need persistent experiment history, access to compute, reproducibility and ways to collaborate with both, each other, and humans.
For autonomous research, we present the_lab.api, a harness that connects agents to experiments, git branches, GPUs and shared discussions. It has supported multi-day and multi-week autonomous campaigns ranging from game-playing agents to kernel-level model optimization.
Together, the demos show how the system around a model can shape agent behavior, and how increasingly capable harnesses can turn individual agents into autonomous research teams.
