Position: Anthropomorphic Language in AI Discourse Can Be Constructive
Abstract
Anthropomorphic language attributes human traits, mental states, or behavioral characteristics to non-human entities. In the context of artificial intelligence, such attribution can lead to confusion, misplaced expectations, and discomfort. Rather than reiterating existing critiques, this position paper argues that anthropomorphic language in AI discourse can be constructive --- it points to where progress on terminological rigor and conceptual clarity should be pursued. Viewing anthropomorphic language as a specific case of language-use in scientific communication, we show (1) how properties of language-use give rise to both our tendency and resistance to anthropomorphic language, and (2) once anthropomorphic language appears, how can we treat it constructively. We outline future actions that should be rooted in a constructive mindset as opposed to condemnation.
