Abstract:

Multiplayer gaming yields social benefits, but can cause harm through toxicity—particularly as directed toward women, players of color, and 2SLGBTQ+ players. Detecting toxicity is challenging, but is necessary for intervention. We present three challenges to automated toxicity detection, and share potential solutions so that researchers can develop HCAI models that detect toxic game communication.
